i just got elliott's "either/or" album. i
think it's really good and i'm sure it
will just get better and better with each
listen. one of the things(other than the
music) that make this album good is the
length, some albums these days are
way too long. does anyone know why
he din't include the lyrics to "cupid's
trick"?

Someone asked me what Elliott has
against factory workers. Seems he
thought the man sang 'no factory
worker s'gonna push me around,'
rather than 'no bad dream fucker...'For
some reason, it just tickles me to think
of Elliott having a grudge against
factory workers. And singing about it.
And I'd like to have those lyrics to
Cupid's Trick too.

I'm terrible at deciphering song lyrics.
Case in point -- when I was a kid I
thought the first line of the Rolling
Stone's "Beast of Burden" was "I
never smelt your pizza burning."
Anyway ... "Cupid's Trick" is such a
powerful in-your-face song, but for
some reason Elliott chose not to grace
us with the lyrics in the Either/Or liner
notes. Does anyone have the lyrics, or
at least the words to the chorus? I think
that musical arrangement is sheer
genius, but I feel that I am missing the
whole picture without knowing the
lyrics. PS - Any Elliott east coast tour
dates??? Please e me if you know of
any! Thx!

proper title. I heard Elliott play it live
on the web from Brownies. I didn't see
any such track listed on any of his

Elliot was unfortunately sandwhiched
between hanson's new video and some
"romeo and juliet" rap video on MTV's
12 angry viewers. of course, they
didn't like the video and it got the
lowest score on the show. screw them.
you don't really want him all over MTV

Hi Anonymous.
You didn't leave your email address so I am responding
here. I hope you get this. I'm interested in getting some of your elliott
tapes. I have one that I recorded that you don't have. It is from 7-11-96
Portland Music Millenium NW. I also have the 7-14-96 show that I taped.
You also have that tape but the quality on mine is really great. I'd be
interested to hear how yours sounds. I also taped the 3-22-96 and 5-15-97
shows. I don't remember trading them to anybody so I guess you have
different copies. How do those sound? I also have other bands that I taped
such as Quasi, Hazel, Jr. High, Sebadoh and a ton more. If you want to trade,
let me know.

A quote from somewhere.... 'Featured performer Elliott Smith gets an Academy Award
nomination for Original Song for ``Miss Misery,'' written and recorded exclusively for the
film at the request of director Gus Van Sant, himself an Academy Award nominee for
Best Director. Composer Danny Elfman also gets the nod for his orchestral contributions
for Best Original Dramatic Score -- ``Good Will Hunting.'' The soundtrack was released on
Dec. 2 of last year to rave reviews. The success of the film has paralleled the success of
the soundtrack. Tuesday's announcement is timed perfectly to coincide with the launch
of the ``Miss Misery'' track to radio, with a video release to follow shortly. Upon learning
of the ``Good Will Hunting'' nominations, Smith commented, ``It's cool that there was a
bunch of nominations for 'Good Will Hunting.' I'm happy to be one of them. Between Gus,
Matt, Ben, Minnie, Robin and Danny, I definitely like the company that I'm in.
Soundtracks were never really my thing; this was sort of a happy accident.'''

ohmygawd - you're right! i forgot all about the dreaded dance numbers
framing the academy award nominated songs...UGH! maybe if elliott can get
into the absurdity of it and go with it a la beck - you know, powderblue
polyester suit, stiff whiteboy dance steps. could be pretty funny. (just
kidding) really, though - it just blows my mind that the academy would
even recognize a song that is so subtle. i just hope this level of exposure and
the accompanying noteriety is where elliott wants to be...

brilliant! just heard that elliott smith snagged an academy award
nomination for best original song: "miss misery" my heart's a'flutter
picturing him in his t-shirt & jeans, strumming an acoustic guitar, singing
barely above a whisper with eyes closed amidst the over-the-top glitz of the

Saw an incredible show at the Crocodile in Seattle Tuesday. The place was packed. Elliott looked and sounded great.
He had some Portland friends there with him so was in high spirits. He was very gracious and interactive with the
audience as usual. Played 5 or 6 absolutely amazing new songs as well as a nice mix of stuff from the last two albums
and 2 covers (Beatles and somebody else?). Seems to be writing more about love and relationships these days. The new
work is just breathtaking. Can't wait for the next album. Later.
